Traveling is so cool. It allows you to experience a place that you don’t live. I just got home from New York City. The city is a magical place. A smelly place, but very magical.
I got to go on this trip with roughly 35 high school students as a chaperone. I went on the same trip when I was in high school, so it was fun to experience it again from a new perspective.
I am from a place that doesn’t have a hustle and bustle feel to it. It is a small town and there is not a lot to do besides drinking. Now, for me that really limits what I can do because I am sober. Don’t get me wrong, there are things that can be charming about living in such a small place. The sense of community can be amazing in times of need, but it can also feel a bit suffocating when you don’t want people to know your business. It is also cool to have very short commute times from one end of town to the other.
Going to a big city means getting to experience the freedom of just being. No one cares who you are or where you are going. No one knows your story. It is fun to be in a place where you can just exist and not have to talk to someone you know everywhere you go. Maybe this makes me sound mean, but I do find it exhausting having to talk to people I know when I am just trying to get my errands done. Funny enough, I actually ran into my high schoolers multiple times throughout the city and it was a little fun to just say hi and keep on walking.
The one thing I really enjoy about a big city is transportation. To a lot of people that would mean taking a taxi or getting an Uber, to me it means walking. Where I live most people drive where they are going, but in a big city it is common to find people walking or running about. I love exploring a new place on foot. I think you get a way better feel for the place you are in by walking where you want to go. You will miss the cool back alley if you take a car. You won’t find the hidden gem with the best baked goods because you couldn’t smell it. You don’t hear the sounds of the city the same way when you take a car. Walking around provides a perspective that is unique.
Not only is traveling by foot great for finding things you wouldn’t by car, but also a great way to get exercise. Staying active on vacation is a great way to feel amazing! Keep your body moving all day and you will sleep great at night. I love the feeling of being on the go all day long, taking a hot shower at night, and sleeping like a baby.
One of the most magical things in a city is looking at it from a birds eye view at night. There is something special about the way a big city glows gold against a black sky.
I guess what I am trying to say is, traveling to a new place is so exciting. Experiencing history and different cultures is so amazing! I used to travel to escape my reality, but now I travel to enhance my reality. I travel to learn and grow as a person and to fuel my adventurous heart. But, I am also so grateful for my life that I live every day.
Travel. Travel to learn and explore and discover new things about yourself, but also appreciate what you have and where you live!
Talk to you soon!
